Rare Earth Magnet Supply Risk Planning

Companies that use rare earth magnets are now treating magnet sourcing as a production-continuity issue. Export restrictions, tariffs, long qualification cycles, and concentrated magnet manufacturing capacity can turn a small component into a program-level risk.

Guide

Map the real exposure

Start with the bill of materials and identify magnet type, material family, coating, country of origin, supplier route, controlled element exposure, and inventory position. Magnets embedded inside assemblies should be included, not just loose magnets purchased directly.

Create qualified alternates before the shortage

Alternate sourcing is hardest after production is already constrained. Buyers should qualify practical alternates for grade, coating, magnetization, inspection method, and assembly fit before a disruption forces a rushed engineering change.

Use material strategy to reduce procurement pressure

Where the performance target is unchanged, HRE-Free equivalents can reduce restricted-material exposure without redesigning the magnetic circuit. Ferrite substitutions, bonded magnets, alternate coatings, and assembly redesigns can also reduce exposure when a broader program review is already planned.
